• Austin, TX — A local homeowner takes going green to the extreme, by scrapping his lawnmower and cutting his grass with scissors. It takes him nearly ten times as long to cut, but he is convinced that going green is worth it.

It seems everybody is going green these days. People are buying more fuel-efficient cars, striving for energy efficiency in the home, and doing other things to reduce the so-called carbon footprint. But few have taken green to heart quite like Roger Broomly of southeast Austin. To do his part in reducing the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, Broomly has done away with his power lawnmower and resorted to cutting his lawn by hand …. with an ordinary pair of scissors.

It actually began as a friendly neighborhood competition between Broomly and some of his neighbors. As he explained:

“Everyone was going green and cutting back on this or that. Recycling and composting and what not. Like a lot of things in the suburbs, it became a sort of contest. I’ve always taken pride in going above and beyond what other folks are doing. In terms of going green this seemed like something that would be hard to beat.”

Once his green mission became clear, Broomly took his lawnmower to metal recycling plant, sharpened up his household scissors, and got busy trimming up his yard. His weekly lawn project went from a 20-minute mowing job to a three-and-a-half scissor cut, but Broomly is convinced the trade-off was worth it.

“I firmly believe that going green is a sacrifice,” he explained. “Sacrifice can be hard sometimes. It can give you grass-stains on your knees and make your sciatica flare up. But nobody said going green would be easy. It’s the right thing to do though. I’m just glad I have a small yard.”
